British Values

Promoting British Values and Understanding Protected Characteristics

At Hemyock Primary School, we are committed to actively promoting British values in accordance with the Department for Education's guidelines. Our goal is to ensure that our pupils leave school well-prepared for life in modern Britain.

We encourage our pupils to regard people of all faiths, races, and cultures with respect and tolerance. It is important for our students to understand that while different people may hold varying views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, everyone living in England is subject to its laws. This understanding fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility.

In addition to promoting British values, we also educate our pupils about protected characteristics as outlined in the Equality Act 2010. These characteristics include age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation. By teaching our pupils about these characteristics, we aim to create an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, and every individual feels valued and respected.

Our curriculum is designed to integrate these values and principles into everyday learning. Through various subjects and activities, we provide opportunities for pupils to explore and understand the importance of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

We believe that by instilling these values, we are helping to develop well-rounded individuals who are not only academically capable but also socially responsible and empathetic members of society. Our commitment to these principles is reflected in our school values: Be Curious, Believe in Yourself, Show Respect, and Embrace Community.

We invite you to learn more about our approach and how we integrate these important values into our school life through the various pages on our website.

The Key Values are:

  • democracy
  • rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
