Computing
Embrace Community Be Curious Show Respect Believe in Yourself
Intent:
At Hemyock Primary School, our Computing curriculum is designed to empower pupils to become confident, creative, and responsible digital citizens. We aim for every child to:
-
Understand the role of technology in their lives and the wider world
-
Use digital tools safely and respectfully, with a strong foundation in online safety
-
Develop computational thinking and problem-solving skills through engaging, age-appropriate programming
-
Apply digital literacy across the curriculum, enhancing learning in all subjects
We believe that Computing should be inclusive and purposeful by supporting children to explore, create, and collaborate in meaningful ways.
Implementation:
We follow the Teach Computing curriculum, developed by the National Centre for Computing Education. This structured programme ensures progression and coverage across four key strands:
-
Computing Systems and Networks
-
Data and Information
-
Programming
-
Creating Media
Each year group engages with six units annually, with online safety embedded throughout. Pupils use a range of devices, including Surface Go tablets, Chromebooks, iPads, and desktop computers, and platforms such as Google Classroom, Scratch, and Microsoft Teams to develop their skills.
Impact:
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Hemyock Primary School will:
-
Demonstrate secure knowledge of key computing concepts and vocabulary
-
Show confidence in using a range of digital tools for different purposes
-
Understand how to stay safe online and make responsible choices
-
Apply their computing skills to solve problems, present ideas, and collaborate effectively
We assess progress through practical outcomes, pupil voice, and teacher observation. Our learners leave us ready to thrive in a digital world.
Online safety is weaved into all of the categories so that it forms a key part of our curriculum.
The units for each year group are shown in the document below.
