Embrace Community Be Curious Show Respect Believe in yourself
At Hemyock Primary School, history is delivered through an engaging and structured workbook approach, ensuring that every pupil accesses a rich, rigorous, and knowledge-led curriculum. This method aligns with principles of cognitive science by reducing cognitive load, enabling pupils to focus on core knowledge and key historical skills.
Our curriculum is carefully designed to develop pupils into critical and analytical thinkers. They are taught to evaluate a range of historical sources and consider differing interpretations of the past. Pupils are encouraged to make meaningful connections between historical content and the wider world, including our local community.
Through this approach, pupils build a strong foundation in historical knowledge and acquire the skills necessary to engage thoughtfully with the past. Cross-curricular links are actively promoted, with pupils drawing on knowledge from subjects such as geography and science to enrich their understanding of historical concepts.
Pupils explore a wide range of captivating topics spanning ancient to modern history, including farming through the ages, the Romans, Ancient Egyptians, World War II, and the Great Fire of London. Each unit includes the study of significant historical events, with a strong emphasis on chronology to help pupils understand how societies and events have evolved over time.
Through hands-on activities and guided inquiry, pupils learn about key historical events at local, national, and global levels. They are supported in identifying similarities and differences across time periods, deepening their understanding of change and continuity, cause and consequence.
