Music
Embrace Community Be Curious Show Respect Believe in yourselfMusic provision at Hemyock Primary School seeks to equip children with knowledge and enthusiasm to create their own music, perform music created by others and listen to and reflect on music. The EYFS Curriculum 2014 and the National Music Curriculum 2013 which provides the statutory framework for teaching and learning includes:
• performing, listening to, reviewing and evaluating music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions
• using their voices, playing instruments and using technology appropriately to compose music on their own and with others
• exploring and understanding notations and the elements of music, and how music is created, produced, and communicated.
Through regular music lessons, children are exposed to a rich range of music experiences: singing, playing, exploring sounds, learning simple notations, understanding the elements of music and how they can be combined, and listening to music from a range of historical periods, composers, songwriters and other musicians. Music learning is mapped out for each year group with learning informed by the National Curriculum, Charanga and resources such as BBC 10 pieces.
Children are encouraged to make music actively, practically and collaboratively. All children have the opportunity each year to learn an instrument, with their class in a large group setting, with an emphasis on basic technique, standard notation and enjoyment. There are opportunities for regular performances in class, assembly and to parents both informally and formally, as well as opportunities to participate in musical activities in the wider learning community and at National and Regional events e.g. Young Voices. Peripatetic Music Tutors also visit our school and offer lessons during the school day, individually or combined. For further details please see the music lessons on our parents’ page.
The impact of music at Hemyock can be seen in many ways:
• through children’s enjoyment and enthusiasm in exploring, creating and performing music
•through children’s ability to discuss and reflect on their own work and the work of others
• through children’s increased sense of self-confidence when contributing and performing whether individually or as part of a larger group.
• through children’s greater awareness of different styles and eras of music
• through children’s approach to working collaboratively
Peripatetic Music Tutors teach lessons during the school day, individually or combined, for further details please see the music lessons on our parents page.
