Phonics assessment:
The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short, one-on-one assessment that helps teachers understand how well children are developing their phonics skills—the ability to decode words using letter sounds. It takes place in June and consists of 40 words, including a mix of real and made-up words, to assess how confidently children can apply their phonics knowledge. The check is designed to be low-pressure, and results help schools identify where extra support may be needed. If a child does not meet the expected standard, they will have the opportunity to retake the check in Year 2, ensuring they receive the right help to build strong reading foundations.
